Bedford Rambling Club
Programme of walks and events.
We are currently holding organised club walks.
We ask walkers to comply with any Covid precautions being recommended by the Government guidelines at the time. We may also put in place any additional measures we feel appropriate for your safety and the safety of others. Names and contact details of all walkers will be taken and recorded until further notice.
Please do not attend any club events if you are feeling unwell, have any Covid symptoms, have tested positive or should be self isolating. Please be sure to let us know if you test Covid positive shortly after attending a walk.
Walking for the pleasure and enjoyment of the countryside.
Our walks are normally circular & start at 10.00 am. Monday walks are normally about 2 hours 4-5 miles. Sunday walks are a bit longer at 5-6 miles.
Well behaved dogs, on a short lead are welcome, unless stated otherwise in the walk description.

Sunday 1st August – Meet at 10am at the Mill Theatre car park, Mill Road, Sharnbrook. This 5.5 mile circular walk passes through part of this pretty village before walking by the old windmill and heading for the lovely Felmersham nature reserve with its tranquil lakes and wildlife. On to Felmersham river bridge then along the banks of the River Great Ouse. A trip through the Pinchmill Islands before heading back to the start across open countryside and meadows. Monday 2nd August – Meet at 10am A 4.32 mile walk from Woburn Village Hall, Woburn. We start the walk across meadows leading to a gradual ascent turning into a moderate climb at the top. Sunday 8th August – Meet at 10am at Mowsbury Park car park on Kimbolton Road off the B660 for a 5-6 mile ramble round Ravensden. Thursday 12th August. Bedford Summer Evening Walk led by Barry Ingram. ‘Life’s full of ups and downs’ Meet at 7pm starting from Mowsbury Park Cafe, Wentworth Drive. Park on Wentworth Drive as the car park closes at 8.30pm. For more information please click here.
Sunday 15th August – Meet at 10am at St Mary’s The Virgin Church, Church End, Everton. This is a six mile walk on mainly flat, firm ground. It goes along part of an old Roman road, which went from Sandy to Godmanchester. It has panoramic views of the countryside and a secret bit of Second World War history. The return is via Tetworth and Woodbury Park with its broadleaved trees and occasional clumps of Scots pine. Postcode: SG19 2JZ LEADER: Michael. Mob: 07505 731114

Monday 16th August 3.00pm. Virtual Zoom talk on Rights of Way. By Allison Nelson, Bedford Borough Council Rights of Way inspector. This talk will be about 1 hour long including questions. The talk is free to club members. You will need to book this talk in advance by completing the online booking form or contact Liz 01525 713284. You are encouraged to ask questions in advance which will be passed to Allison.

Monday 23rd August – Meet at 10am A 4 mile walk starting from the lay by at Deadman’s Hill on the A6 near the village of Clophill. The lay by is on the right if travelling from Bedford. The walk is through undulating woods and along a sandy ridge towards Maulden church. We return across some sheep grazing meadows back into the woods to the car park. Sunday 29th August – Meet at 10am at Go Outdoors car park on Norse Road. This walk will take us across Castle Mill lock where we will turn right and follow the Great Ouse to near Priory Marina. We will then turn left and follow the old railway track through the woods to the Danish Camp . We can stop for coffee at the Danish Camp before returning to the car park following the Great Ouse and back past Castle Mill lock. Mostly paths but some field walking. Woods can be a bit muddy. Tuesday 31st August 7.30pm. Virtual Zoom talk. The Rise and Fall of the R101 Airship. By Nick Clarke.
The centre of the ‘airship dream’ was Cardington in Bedfordshire. This presentation covers the period prior to the R101 airship, his family’s involvement with the Royal Airship Works and Short Brothers and some of the details of the airship. The crash site in France is discussed and what remains of the Airship Works today. This talk will be about 1 hour long with questions. This talk is free to club members, non members will be asked to make a donation towards the cost. You will need to book this talk in advance by completing the online booking form.
