Monday 6th January – Meet 10 a.m. at the Village Hall car park, Green End Road, Great Barford for this 4.3 mile walk. Please park at the far end in case the hall is in use. We will walk out of the village along pavements and a short bit of road before heading up into fields and open countryside. We go under the bypass and north towards Wilden before turning east along field edges. We’ll cross the Barford Road and turn south heading back to Great Barford over the bypass along a quiet road and tracks. No gates or stiles, some slight inclines and the prerequisite of winter – mud! Sunday 26th January -Meet at car park for St Mary’s Church, Carlton for just less than 6 mile walk. Car park is next to the church on the road between Turvey and Carlton, the Carlton side of the church. The walk involves a short stretch of road, but mainly is along field paths, with relatively few muddy stretches. We will begin by walking along the lane to Emmaus, then take a footpath from Emmaus across the fields to Turvey. There are a few muddy stretches, but all fairly short. Once in the outskirts of Turvey, we head along paths parallel to the main road towards the centre, go into the village briefly, then take the Ouse Valley way and head back to Carlton. Monday 31st March – Meet at 10am in the car park of the Fox and Hounds, Riseley. The walk is a slight variation of the eastern loop we’ve done before. We’ll bypass most of the muddy path beside Bedford Autodrome and what remains should be drier by the day of the walk. Otherwise it was almost all dry on the recce. We use field edges, cross-field paths, Hangman’s Lane and a little road walking, the total distance being 4.78 miles by OS online mapping, or 4.95 by my OS tracking on the phone. Take your pick. Monday 28th April – Meet at 10am – Starting from The Wheatsheaf 42, Church Street, Tempsford Church End (plenty of safe parking outside on the road) . A gentle 4 mile stroll along the River Ivel down to Blunham stopping off for refreshments and a comfort break at the village hall. (£1.50 per-person cash only). Returning on the opposite side of the river. Some gates but no stiles. There is an issue with a fallen tree and some riverbank slippage, but passable. Sunday 4th May – Meet at 10 a.m at Notcutt Garden Centre, Buckden Road, Brampton for 5 mile walk. Start of the walk begins at church in High Street. We then cross a field and carefully walk through golf club. Please note golfers have priority. There may be some cows !
Path leads us to nice walk by river which may be muddy if it has rained. We actually pass the garden centre again but carry on in different direction round old air field which then leads into Brampton village. Some road walking. Near the end of our walk we have a choice for refreshments at the garden centre, which may well be very busy, or the local pub who have asked us not to park there as they are very busy doing lunches on Sundays. Sunday 11th May – CHANGE OF POSTCODE PE28 0SS Meet at 10.am for a 8.5 mile walk around Grafham Water. of about 8.5 miles. We will walk for 50minutes, then stop for a quick drink and bathroom stop. We will complete 5 miles in total and then we will break for a picnic. If anyone wants to put their feet in the water they are able to do so! Monday 12th May – Meet at 10 a.m. at Woburn Village Hall, where we have permission to park. The countryside around Woburn is beautiful but perhaps the highlight occurs at the end with the Abbey resplendent in the distance. The walk is a little longer than the Monday average (4.6 miles) and has one reasonably steep ascent. No stiles and (at the time of writing) no mud. Monday 19th May – Meet at 10am at The Five Bells, Northill Road, Cople, (Opp. All Saints Church) Permission has been granted to use the pub car park. A gentle 4 mile walk over farmland and some beautiful countryside including a wildflower meadow. Horses and Cardington Hangers in view. Mostly flat with just a couple of gates to navigate. Monday 26th May – Meet at 10 a.m. at Swineshead church for this 4.7 mile walk which heads for Melchbourne, turns off towards Riseley and finally back to Swineshead. There is a short road stretch, field edges, concrete tracks and a farm track. Some field edges are hard and knobbly, but most of the walk is good going. Sunday 1st June – Meet at 10.00am in Ridgmont Station car park on the opposite side of the railway line from the Tea Room. The walk goes towards Ridgmont and then turns to go up Lidlington Hill. From the top of the hill there are views of Lidlington/Brogborough Lake, Cranfield, Marston Vale, and in the distance the Cardington Hangers and Milton Keynes. Monday 2nd June – Meet at 10am at The Swan Pub, Wavendon Road, Salford. Please park in the far grass overflow car park at the top. Permission has been granted. The walk about 4.5 miles along good tracks and some country roads, beginning at the 12th century church of ‘Saint Mary the Virgin.’ Making our way across meadows towards the picturesque hamlet of Aspley Hall, horses, cattle and fine properties here. On towards ‘Saint Nicholas’ Hulcote church, eventually into the lower part of Hulcote woods. We turn here continuing down an attractive track then country road returning to Aspley Hall, then Waterhall and back into Salford. Monday 23rd June – Meet at 10am starting from the Roxton Garden Centre, off Bedford Road, Roxton (please park at the very far end away from the centre) a gentle 3.5 mile stroll through the village church and down to the river where The Great Ouse and the Ivel converge. Back along the river, possibly some wildlife. No stiles, some tree roots and no major slopes. This walk is ideal for a hot day as it provides plenty of shade and is shorter than our normal walks. We touch the edge of Wood End, go west to Sunny Farm, a short distance on the Swineshead road, then double back by Pertenhall Brook to the churchyard. From there it’s up the hill, across to Wood End and back to the start. There are grassy lanes, cross-field paths and field edges. There is some easy undergrowth but it contains lots of grass seeds. Part of it might be mown down by the time of our walk. Two ditch crossings were blocked on the recce, necessitating well over an hour of pruning and a fair number of briar wounds. Monday 4th August – Meet at 10.a.m. at School Lane, Eaton socon for this 4 mile-ish walk. We will walk down the lane towards the river and then walk alongside it towards Eynesbury. We’ll then head back towards St Neots through the Pocket Park. We head into the town and walk along the High Street towards the river again. We’ll cross the Riverside Park and then follow the river back to our start point. Mostly good paths and flat walking with several bridges. The River Mill pub will be open for refreshments. Monday 18th August – Meet for 10am starting in Great Barford for this approximately 4 mile walk. Please park on New Road alongside the church wall or in the small car park between the church and Woodpecker Close. The walk starts from the Village Green and goes over the river and a short way up the road towards Blunham. We cross farmland and a stile to Route 51, the Varsity Way. We’ll walk to Willington Lock passing through newly quarried areas. Then back along the river towards Great Barford crossing the river again at Old Mill Lock and heading back into the village where the Anchor will be open for refreshments. Monday 29th September – Meet at 10.00 a.m. at Brook End Potton. The walk leaves Potton via Peg Nut Hill (woods), towards Sutton, then to Deepdale (Snow Hill) returning to Potton. Route was very firm under foot when recce’d (18.9). No stiles encountered. There is some elevation – Peg Nut (mild ascent), & Deepdale (mild ascent, and mostly descent!!)A very small amount of – busy – road walking to negotiate (crossing junction) at Deepdale. Monday 20th October – Meet at 10 a.m. for a delightful 4.5 mile hike from Westoning up to Pulloxhill (yes, there is an element of ascent: approx 350 – 400 ft total across the full distance).
The route up offers panoramic views over to Sharpenhoe, Sundon & Pegsdon hills. Plenty of gates to pass through, plus one small wooden ‘footpath ‘bridge’, but there no stiles to negotiate. A couple of the meadows/fields were found to have livestock grazing within.
One freshly ploughed field encountered – but as this is at the highest point – hopefully it will feature not claggy mud, not unless exceptionally heavy rain falls prior to the walk.
