This easy walking 5-6 mile walk is virtually mud free as it follows hard surface tracks and Redways, passing Tongwell Lake and the Grand Union Canal. Chance for a drink back at the pub afterwards. Monday 15th January – Meet at 10am at Deepdale. This walk is about 4.5 miles and fairly easy going starting from Deepdale and on to Sandy Transmitter mast and then towards the RSPB and back to Deepdale. Fairly dry under foot with just a bit of mud. Meet at the turning to Deepdale, if coming from Sandy pass the RSPB reserve and continue towards Potton but turn left at Deepdale. Monday 22nd January – Meet at 10am in The Greyhound pub car park, 68, Northwood End Road Haynes Bedford . (As there are a number of hard surface tracks on this walk it’s a relatively less muddy option at this time of year.) We start this 3.7 mile walk through meadows with views over the countryside towards Chicksands woods. At Appley corner we join the John Bunyan trail which has a hard surface eventually turning into Rowney Woods where we make a gradual accent along good wide tracks with plenty of rest stops if required. There is some walking along quiet country roads towards the end of the walk. No Stiles. 3.7 miles. The Pub isn’t open for refreshments until after 2pm, however we may park. Sunday 28th January – Meet at 10am at the Millenium Meadow car park, Gardener’s Lane, Henlow (the car park is at the end of the road) for this 5.5 mile walk. We will pass the lakes on the way to Langford, then over the water meadow (hopefully not too much water!) following the River Ivel past Stamford Lock to Clifton and back. Monday 29th January – Meet at 10am at St Mary’s Church in Everton. The walk is a 4.5 circular walk mostly over firm pathways but some slopes, through a few gates but no stiles. The walk includes a visit to the site of the former RAF base at Tempsford and the memorial to those involved on ‘special duties’ during WWII. Monday 12th February – Meet at 10am in the Fox and Hounds car park, Riseley, for a 4.7 mile walk. This is a variation of the Riseley East route, taking a track and grass field to avoid most of the Autodrome perimeter path, some of which is very muddy. After Hangman’s Lane we return to the village via Riseley Lodge Farm. We then cross the road and make our way along the grass to the church and eventually back to the pub for refreshments or lunch. Monday 19th February – Meet at 10am at The Crown Pub car park at 2, High Street, Henlow on a walk that is just under 4 miles. Walking is easy, mainly on tracks which in places are a bit wet and muddy but will not be a problem. It is ESSENTIAL that when you arrive car drivers must register their car by going to the bar and using the touch screen. You risk a fine of £100 – you have been warned! The pub opens at 9.00am and obviously we will be able to get refreshments after the walk and the toilets are available before we set off. We will walk through an attractive newish housing development and pick up a footpath that will take us across the River Ivel and then back to the church. Sunday 25th February – Meet at 10am at Swineshead church, Swineshead. This is a 5 mile walk mainly along green lanes and through woods. We will walk down Sandye lane and then the green lane to Swineshead wood, around Swineshead wood, along the green lane to Spanoak wood, around Spanoak wood. We are hoping the bird song will be loud in Spanoak wood at this time of year. Then we head back through the village to the church. 4 gates, no stiles, it is very muddy with lots of surface water so may also be slippery. Waterproof boots, gaiters and walking poles or sticks are recommended if you have them. Little bit of an incline but nothing very steep. Monday 26th February – Meet at 10am in The Cross Keys car park, 159, High Street Cranfield. (permission has been granted to park). This is an undulating walk approximately 3.5 miles, much of it on gravel paths. The walk leads us along a ridge flanked by meadows with more good views across the countryside. This walk has been chosen because it affords us better under foot conditions. However, some aspects of the walk may change subject to conditions. Monday 4th March – Meet at 9.45am at the free car park, Belfry Court, Sandy off the High Street for a walk around RSPB nature reserve. From here I hope to persuade a number of you to fill a few cars up to passenger capacity, as the RSPB car park charges £6.00 per car, this will mean a contribution of £1.50 per person on arrival. A few people have dual membership in RSPB and have expressed a willingness to lend a card out to other cars, there may be more members willing to do the same. The RSPB lodge is just a few minutes drive from the free car park up Potton Road to the Gatehouse, The Lodge, Sandy. SG19 2DL. No dogs on this walk please. Sunday 10th March – Meet at 10am in Great Staughton village hall car park, opposite the Snooty Tavern, which unfortunately is closed. This 6-mile walk takes us via Dillington to Agden Hill Farm, hoping the alpacas are in their paddock, carries on to briefly pass close to Grafham Water, and bypasses West Perry on the way back to Staughton. Lots of birdsong & gorse in bloom. Undulating with a number of short but challenging steeper ascents & descents in places. Mainly good paths throughout with just a couple of muddy places. This is a 4.9 mile walk along a track at Snow hill then through a little of a Potton housing estate & on into Pegnut wood leading to pretty Sutton Ford which we’ll cross, over the bridge (or through the ford if you want to paddle) making our way through the lovely village, then the spinney skirting the golf course perimeter, called Galley hill along good tracks & back onto Carthagena Road & across the road to Deepdale. Sunday 28th April – Meet at 10am at Rowney Warren, Chicksands car park by the mobile cafe. This is an approximately 6.5 mile walk which will take around 2.5 hours. We start from Rowney Warren and walk out on good paths to Chicksands wood, through the wood which is full of bluebells and turn onto a path which is muddy. After leaving the woods we follow field edges downhill, we then go back up the hill and through a small wood, again this is muddy but has wild garlic and bluebells, past the MOD firing range and back to the car park. No stiles just a couple of gates. I would suggest walking poles if you have them as some of the downhills are muddy and slippery. Refreshments at the mobile coffee wagon but no toilet facilities. Monday 29th April –Meet at 10am at Lorraine Road, directly opposite Wootton Cemetery for this mainly flat 4 mile walk from Wootton to Kempston Church End. Much of the route is fields & farmland but there are longish sections of the route which travel along quiet ‘b-roads’. We will pass close to historic Kempston House, hopefully this and it’s grounds will afford a decent view. There is nowhere for refreshments on this walk as both the pubs are shut. Postcode: MK43 9DG. Sunday 5th May – Meet at 10am at Totternhoe Knolls Picnic Site car park. As you drive through Totternhoe, look out for a brown signpost directing you up a narrow lane. Go under a metal archway and into the car park. The terrain is fairly hilly compared to what we are used to around Bedford town. We enjoy spectacular views if the weather is reasonable. If not we can still enjoy spring flowers and birdsong, lambs, ducks and geese. This is a short walk with no stiles, but is not without some hazards, notably one very steep hill which we can climb up and down the other side. But there is an easier alternative if people want. Monday 6th May – Meet at 10am at Priory Country Park, Barkers Lane entrance. Meet on the green in the centre of the round car park. We will set off from there across fields to the sewage works and drop down onto 100 acre field. Following the path along the river to Castle Mill Lock. We will then pick up the path that will lead us back to the main pathway to Priory. If we’re feeling up to it we can go round the lake back to the cafe and car park, or take a shorter route. Sunday 12th May – Meet at 10am in Ridgmont Station car park on the opposite side of the railway line from the Tea Room. The walk goes towards Ridgmont and then turns to go up Lidlington Hill. From the top of the hill you can see Lidlington/Brogborough Lake, and there are views over to Cranfield, Marston Vale and in the distance the Cardington Hangers and Milton Keynes. Monday 13th May – Meet at at Wilden village hall for a 4.6 mile walk from Wilden towards Colmworth. (Entrance coming from Brickhill on the left when entering village, or if coming via Renhold, turn left in Wilden last buillding on right at end of village.) There is a slight incline for 1/4 mile then flat, overlooking the water tower and towards Thurleigh. We then walk towards Colmworth and the mainly downhill back to the village hall. Sunday 19th May – Meet at 10am in Church Lane, Little Staughton for a 6 mile walk. There is a service at 9am, so as we are walking by the church we’ll have to bear this in mind. The walk takes us around the old Manorial earthworks and then back along the brook to the old chapel. Monday 20th May – Meet at 10am outside the Fox & Hounds pub Riseley High Street for a 4.2 mile walk from Riseley towards Melchbourne. We have permission to park in the pub car park. Sunday 2nd June – Meet at 10.00am at The Green in Marston Moretaine. The walk starts from St Mary’s Church and goes into part of the Millennium Country Park. Monday 3rd June – This walks begins in RSPB Sandy. Please meet up at Deepdale SG19 2NH orW3W // batches.pile.publisher. Here we’ll fill a few cars up to capacity to drive to RSPB we have 4 car passes. Any extras it’s £6.00 per car £1.50 per person if you fill the car. We plan to leave Deepdale by 9.50am so we’ve time to change into footwear for RSBP walk @ 10.00am.We take a different route this time, a little more challenging with some steeper steps mostly going up. Undulating quite a bit. However the scenery is stunning at this time with masses of foxgloves, rhododendrons, Azaleas & views across to Biggleswade. We’ll pass the exposed rock face of the quarry now pitted with nest sites. There’s a climb back to the lodge gardens also beautiful with more flowering trees & plants. We’ll stop here for our break. The cost will be £3.00 per person. You can either pay by cash or online, but please make sure you mark it with BBQ and your name so that I can identify it.
We will provide all the food. So that we do not have the same amount of food left over as last year, there will be buns, burgers, sausages, rolls and a vegetarian option, but we will not be doing salads. If you wish to have these please bring them along with you. We will provide the desserts. [Again, so that we don’t have so much left over.]
You will need to bring your own chairs, table, cutlery, glasses and whatever you wish to drink. There is a Tesco Express in Shortstown in case of emergency.

Sunday 30th June – Meet at 10am in Great Staughton village hall car park. This 6 mile walk is a repeat of the one in March. We walk by field edges to Dillington, then along the road and track to Agden Hill Farm, where we should see the alpacas. More field edges bring us to Grafham Water perimeter path which we follow as far as the car park and cafe. We break there, taking refreshment either in the cafe or sitting outside. From there we bypass West Perry and head back on field edges to Dillington and by Cage Lane to Staughton. The Snooty Tavern opposite the car park is now open again for those who are thirsty. Sunday 28th July – Meet at 10am in the Three Fyshes car park for this circular walk of just over 6 miles. It is an easy, pleasant walk, offering lovely views across the rolling, Bedfordshire countryside. For most of the walk we will be following wide field edge paths. Monday 23rd Sept – Meet at 10am, The White Hart, Ampthill Road, Maulden MK45 2DH. This 4.5 mile walk has great views for most of the way. Making our way along the village street we soon reach rolling meadows before gradually making a slight ascent into the top of Kings Wood. On exiting, we make our way along Limbersly Lane. There is a short walk along the road [not busy] then into fields with 360 degree views towards Maulden Woods which we skirt around towards the church, through the grave yard and back down into the village. Monday 14th Oct – Meet at 10am at the West Car Park, Woburn Road, Ampthill (turn right off the B530 just before the junction with the A507). Ampthill Park over to Cooper’s Hill (Greensands Ridge) and through the Limes. Crossing through the town to St. Andrews church along Rectory Lane climbing towards Houghton Hall crossing back into Ampthill Park through the woodlands. This is a 4-mile walk. Is there a better way to start the working week than a walk (of approx 4 miles) in the beautiful countryside around Woburn? In autumn we can watch the leaves wither and fall and perhaps see how frost has rimmed the pools with ice and hung diamonds in the spiders’ webs. We cross the Renhold Road and follow tracks east through fields and farmland before crossing the Barford Road. Further on we turn north and descend the hill to East End. Monday 2nd December – Meet at 10am near Melchbourne church for this 4.8 mile walk. We walk to and across Knotting Road, and follow grassy field edges and tracks to Crowfield Farm. A wheat field leads us to the bridleway to Rifle Range Farm, from there taking the long bridleway back to Knotting Road. Soon off it again, we eventually reach Hillands Plantation and get back to the start. Conditions on the recce on 18th November were very good for the time of year, with no mud worthy of the name and no deep hoof prints. Sunday 15th December – Meet at 10am at Woburn Public Car Park located in Park St opposite the church for this 5.25 mile walk. Parking is free, but may be busy as Woburn food market is also on between 10-2pm. Subject to the weather, this is a splendid walk through the deer park with lovely views of the open countryside, lakes and many deer not yet currently employed for their services at Christmas. With a short walk along the footpath of Park Street, we then enter the private land of Woburn estate with a mixture of parkland and public footpaths where there are no stiles to navigate, only a couple of gates. There is the probability of some muddy areas along the footpath located outside of the deer park. After the walk, there is also the option of visiting the food market located in Woburn town Centre which is a very short walk from the car park and is well worth a visit whereby, both food and refreshments can be purchased.
