More field edges and paths to the wood and then up to the church then back along the track to the start. I have found a slightly different route so there are no stiles but it will be muddy in places. Monday 2nd January – Meet at 10am – Sandy Heath. Starting from Deepdale which is on the left hand side of the B1042 between the Sandy RSPB and Potton (Turn left at the railway signal!) Park safely on the left hand side of Deepdale immediately after turning off the B1042. The 4.5 mile walk will take us up Deepdale before turning left down the Long Riding towards the RSPB. We will then follow the RSPB Skylark trail across Sandy Heath following a permissive path around the disused sand pit before completing a circuit around Sandy Heath Transmitter. Sunday 8th January – Meet at 10am by St Peter’s Church, De Pary’s Avenue, Bedford for a 5 mile mainly urban walk into Castle Road area, following alleyways to The Embankment, touching into Russell Park, crossing Newnham Avenue, walking alongside Newnham Allotments then following a muddy path into Priory Park to walk around the lake ( the path I was planning to use is flooded). We make our way back passing the cafe and toilets, a possible stop here, then follow the cycle path into Aspects, into Tennyson Road, Kingsley Road, George Street, Castle Road, through the Community Herb Garden and retrace our steps back to De Pary’s. Monday 23rd January – Meet at 10am at Swineshead church, Swineshead. A walk mainly along green lanes and through woods- we will walk down Sandye lane and then the green lane to Swineshead wood, around Swineshead wood, along the green lane to Spanoak wood, around Spanoak wood. Then we head back along the green lane to Swineshead wood and take a different path through Swineshead wood to a public footpath across fields, returning to the other end of Swineshead village, then back through the village to the church. Distance about 5 miles. 4 gates, no stiles, Green lane and woods are likely to be muddy in places. Little bit of an incline but nothing very steep. Sunday 12th February – Meet at 10am. Park in Ridgmont High Street near to All Saints Church. This is a varied walk, which includes part of the Woburn Abbey Deer Park and the chances of seeing more exotic animals on the fringes of the Safari Park. Monday 13th February – Meet at at the West Car Park, Woburn Road, Ampthill (turn right off the B530 just before the junction with the A507 ). This is a 4.5 mile walk starting from here walking around Cooper’s hill towards the war memorial which has a really good information board for those with an interest. We make our way from here through a housing estate towards Kings arms garden for which we have access to see the lovely snowdrops, daffodils, wood anemones, then past St Andrew’s church making our way across countryside, with lovely views. There is one stile to climb with the challenge of a rather boggy puddle on the other side. A slight incline which takes us up to Houghton House more lovely views. Then we return through Ampthill park along the ridge towards the hub for refreshments & toilets or straight to the car park. Sunday 26th March– Meet at 10am at Colmworth Golf Club. This 5.4 mile walk takes us out of the Golf Club, across or around the edge of various fields and farmland heading towards, but not quite reaching Wilden. Then it heads back , mainly around the edges of more fields arriving at the Golf Club via the lakes at the rear. There are no stiles or steep hills but the walk is slightly undulating inplaces. The walk is largely on grassy paths but passes by a couple of farms and can be muddy in a few places if we have had rain. There are a few gates and a very small amount of road walking. The ramble is about 4 miles starting with a walk along a quiet road then a gradual climb into the countryside with some wonderful views ending up with a walk through Kempston Wood. Sunday 23rd April – Meet at 10am at The Three Fyshes Pub car park Turvey. Permission has been granted to use the pub car park and we have been requested that we park at the top end of the car park wherever possible. This will be a relatively easy sub-6-mile circular walk leading through the Abbey Park, where we then pass under the old disused railway line, weather permitting we should be able to see some lovely uninterrupted countryside views along the walk, there are a couple of gradual slopes (up and down) No stiles to negotiate, just a few kissing gates. There is some walking along a quiet country road, but the majority is on footpaths. Plenty of rest stops along the way if required and no sheep or cows were noted during the latest recce. If you would like to enjoy a pub lunch after the walk you will need to book this as soon as possible prior to the walk taking place. Monday 22nd May – Meet at 10am at the village green opposite The Anchor, Great Barford for a 4 mile walk. The pub is open on Mondays serving drinks and food and they have two parking areas for those visiting the pub after the walk. There is also roadside parking in New Road alongside the church and a further small car park between the church and Woodpecker Close. We will cross the High Street and walk along the north side of the River Ouse until we cross a bridge at Old Mill Lock to the southern bank. Lots of wildlife to see and also quarrying works underway. At Willington Weir we will follow Route 51 towards Blunham and Sandy. Leaving Harlington for this stile free walk, we head out towards the Sundon Hills before joining the tracks that take us below the Moleskin Hills. With views off the Sharpenhoe Clappers we make our way through the village before joining the John Bunyan trail. Monday 5th June – Meet at 10am opposite a property called Garden Croft in the village of Ickleford. I may advise another parking spot should we have had a lot of rain. This is a 4.5 mile walk with no hills or stiles. We start our walk from here to loop around some fields and hedgerows before entering Oughton Common and Nature Reserve. The paths following the river are good and usually mud free. We will cross the Common which leads onto a lane with some nice views across the countryside. We then enter a wood, the paths are easy to follow though they are criss crossed with exposed roots and tree stumps. (There is another track running alongside, outside the woods away from the river if you don’t feel comfortable negotiating the roots but not so pretty.) REMINDER for all those booked – Sunday 11th June – Summer Barbecue at the Air Cadets premises in Shortstown, Bedford. There is a nominal charge of £2.50 per person to cover the costs of the burgers and includes a donation to the Air Cadets. We will then be asking people to provide salads and desserts. Monday 10th July –Meet at 10am at Lidlington, Folly Wood field. ( Through the gate which I’m planning to unlock at 9.40am) Broughton End Lane Lidlington. This is a 4.5 mile walk with no stiles but 2 busy roads. There are fine views across the countryside. We begin our walk crossing into another field across the road a little further on. There we follow fine trails into Jackdoor Hill around the golf course through Blackfields plantation eventually crossing a busy road into Moneypot Hill , another pretty woodland with fine views as we emerge following trails alongside flowering rapeseed. Another busy road to cross then making our way back towards Folly field via grand viewing points over Lidlington. (Your cars will be locked in the field at 10 am when we leave and can’t be accessed until we return from our walk hopefully around 12 mid-day). Monday 7th August – Meet at 10am at Chambers lane, Ickleford. Walking from Ickleford recreation grounds this walk of 4.1 miles takes us along well maintained shady footpaths with fine views of open countryside. Our aim is Cadwell Lavender farm which is in full bloom at this time also sunflowers which add another splash of colour. We have one busy road under the railway line to cross then a short incline towards the fields leading towards the farm with the colourful views. There is plenty to see at the center, and a rather nice cafe & toilets (you may wish to return to after the walk) After our fleeting visit we return by different paths avoiding the road by crossing a railway footbridge. Monday 14th August – Meet at 10am at the Maulden Wood car park opposite the Greensand Trust building. (north bound lay-by on the A6). An enjoyable 3.5 mile walk through the tranquil Maulden Woods and on to St. Mary the Virgin Church, Maulden. Affording views across open country side. There are several gates but no stiles. Two sets of fairly steep steps, one with a handrail. One quite steep long incline. When checking the route there was a little mud. If you would like to enjoy a drink or pub lunch after the walk, The Flying Horse at Clophill should be open, or recently discovered, a catering van in the start / finish layby car park. We begin walking towards Back street & on towards the ‘Slade’ through woodland across meadows. Reaching a short incline we’re rewarded with fine views as we make our way to the former ruins of St. Mary’s the Virgin church which was notorious during the 60’s + 70’s for dark satanic practices but has now been cleverly halted in it’s decline & is of much historic interest. We’ll do a loop around the ridge through woods & meadows with spectacular views on either side, we then zigzag our way down the Smithcombe hills, hardly aware of any descent, back to the Chequers. Sunday 1st October– Meet at 10am Public Car Park, Park Street, Woburn, MK17 9PG [ what3words ///objective.insects.raft]- A 5.7 mile circular walk across fields and through woods, crossing by Woburn Golf course. There are a number of inclines, but no stiles. It was a little muddy underfoot after the rain, so I would suggest walking boots and also long trousers for the stinging nettles. Monday 2nd October – Meet at 10am at Old Warden Village Hall, Bedford Road, Old Warden for a 4.9 mile walk. We’re now asked to pay a small donation per car for the upkeep. From the car park we follow the road towards St Leonard’s church ( short ascent here) then take the North Beds trail through Palmer’s wood towards Green Sands ridge walk. We follow this towards the nature reserve which runs along the top of Cardington railway tunnel,with fine views across Cardington, circulating the reserve, we retrace our steps a little way before taking another track leading towards quaint Warden St, then Bedford Road back towards car park. The walk is 5 miles along good tracks and some country roads, beginning at the 12th century church of ‘Saint Mary the Virgin.’ Making our way across meadows towards the picturesque hamlet of Aspley Hall, lots of horses and fine properties here. On towards ‘Saint Nicholas’ Hulcote church also centuries old, eventually into the lower part of Hulcote woods. We turn here continuing down an attractive track then country road (more horses) returning to Aspley Hall, then Waterhall and back into Salford. Sunday 22nd October– Meet at 10amfrom Mowsbury Park car park off Wentworth Drive. This will be a 4.5 mile walk through Putnoe Woods and up towards Ravensden before circling back via Ravensden Brook. Much of the walk will be on farmland so any dogs will need to be kept on a lead due to the proximity of grazing sheep. There is one, quite lengthy moderate hill but no stiles. There are three short stretches of road on this 5-mile walk, the rest being on farm tracks and good field edges. There is some surface mud on parts of the tracks due to traffic, but most of the way is good. Most of the walk is on tracks and field margins, but there is one field to cross which does tend to get a bit sticky. There is one long, gentle climb and another rather steeper. Monday 4th December – Meet at 10am at Aspley Heath Lodge, Church Road Woburn Sands. Please park near to Aspley Heath Lodge and meet by the pond. This is an undulating walk of around 4.5 miles, covering 4 heaths & 2 woods, quite boggy in places at the moment, but not clinging clay & the bonus of some other really wide sandy footpaths too. We begin our walk in woodland through the divided Old & New Wavendon Heath’s, past the Fuller’s Earth Lodge & across into Aspley wood. Following tracks until we reach the center of town, a little pavement walking, then back into Aspley Heath & Wavendon wood then part of Bow Brickhill Heath to finish. We make our way from here towards Kings arms garden for which we have access, then past St Andrew’s church making our way up Holly lane. Then across the road back into Ampthill park with fine views towards the hub for refreshments & toilets or straight to the car park. The walk is about 5 miles and fairly easy going starting from Deepdale and on to Sandy Transmitter mast and then towards the RSPB and back to Deepdale. Even with all the rain the paths were only a bit mucky in places. Meet at the turning to Deepdale, coming from Sandy pass the RSPB reserve and continue towards Potton but turn left at Deepdale.
