First walks of the year start again after COVID Lockdown.

Monday 12th April – Meet at 10am  Great Denham. Meeting in the public car park Kingswood Way. On the right as you enter Great Denham from the A428 bypass. DO NOT go up to the golf club. ( No 8 bus leaving Bedford bus station 09.35 to Great Denham, Carnoustie Drive 09.52.) Approximately 4 miles of easy walking with a few gates but no stiles. Along the river to Bromham Bridge, back through fields to Biddenham Church then along Coffin Path to the pond, over the golf course and back to the start Postcode: MK40 4FA . LEADER: Gerry. Sunday 18th April – Meet at 10am   A 5 mile walk around Renhold, starting from Wentworth Drive and through the Howbury Hall Estate to Wilden. 2 stiles and a couple of small hills.  If coming from Church lane end turn left at the roundabout – Wentworth Drive/Dover Crescent and then sharp left again, park at the far end or in the road on the right, Dunster Gardens.  We will meet on the grass near the roundabout. Monday 19th April – Meet at 10am Starting from The Wheatsheaf 42, Church Street, Tempsford (plenty of safe parking outside on the road) a gentle 4 mile stroll along the River Ivel down to Blunham and back. Sunday 25th April – Meet at 10am in Go Outdoors car park. A 5.5 mile walk to Willington going through Grange Estate, around Bulge Wood then path to Willington Village, walking through here to the Dovecote with a possible coffee stop. We then follow the path the Elstow Brook walking along side the brook, back on the path and Grange Estate. Good paths, flat surfaces, no stiles. Monday 26th April – Meet at 10am. A 4 mile, two hour walk starting from Chestnut Avenue playground in Bromham. The walk goes to Stevington windmill and the back across the fields to Salem Thrift which is a bluebell wood. The walk is across undulating countryside. Sunday 2nd May -Meet at 10am Green Energy Walk. Meet at Lincroft School, Oakley. The school have given permission to park in their car park so please use that instead of trying to park on the road. Monday 3rd May – Meet at 10am  Starting from Old Warden Village Hall car park, Bedford Road, Old Warden. This is a 4.72 mile walk with some small gradients but not a difficult walk. The car park may be busy at the weekend so please park sensibly and neatly to allow as many as possible to use their car park, please try to arrive a little early to park. Sunday 9th May – Meet at 10am  This is approximately a 6 mile walk meeting at Sundon Hills Country Park. Walking to the Clappers and via Streatley enjoying wonderful views of Bedfordshire. Monday 10th May – Meet at 10am at Harrold Odell Country Park. Parking at the car park but not keeping in the park to walk but doing a small detour of the village then heading across meadows towards Odell woods (full of bluebells) and back along the riverside of the country park. Sunday 16th May – Meet at 10am  A walk in two parts from St. Denys Church, Church Lane, Colmworth. We walk through the churchyard into the Country Park following paths through open countryside with views over the Great Ouse Valley. After 3.25 miles back to the country park for a stop. The second part of the walk is 2.25 miles, crossing the road onto a path through a spinney where the path climbs over the remains of a medieval dam, coming back via the Village Hall where an information board can be seen. Monday 17th May – Meet at 10am Walking from Cople Sports and Social Club car park, Grange Lane, Cople. A gentle 4 mile walk over farmland and some interesting countryside. Sunday 23rd May – Meet at 10am  Meeting at The Emmaus Village, School Lane, Carlton. A 5.5 mile walk along to Chellington Church returning to Emmaus via the Allotment Gardens. Muddy in places at the start of the walk, one stile and a couple of hills, one as we are returning to Emmaus. Please park in the OVERFLOW CAR PARK in Emmaus village. Monday 24th May – Meet at 10am outside the Rushmere Park Visitor Centre. This is around a 5 mile walk through Rushmere and Stockgrove Country Parks following the Greensand Ridge Walk with coffee for those who want to stay after the walk at the Tree Tops Cafe. Slightly further out than usual but it should be an interesting walk which includes 9 gates and 5 stiles. Park in the Rushmere car park (charge applies). Sunday 30th May – Meet at 10am  Castle Ashby Circular (6.5miles) going through the delightful hamlet of Chadstone, heading towards the river up to Whiston Lock then up to Whitson Church and back to Castle Ashby. There are tea rooms at the end of the walk either in the rural courtyard, Castle Ashby gardens or the newly opened Falcon. Meet at Castle Ashby Rural shopping area. Monday 31st May – Meet at 10am.  Starting from The Three Fyshes car park, Turvey this is a 4 mile walk through the Abbey Park then over farmland towards Devil’s Spinney. Just gates and some tree roots to navigate. The Three Fyshes are happy for us to use their car park and their garden to purchase drinks afterwards subject to the latest Covid restrictions. Sunday 6th June – Meet at 10am – A 6 mile walk starting from Buckden Towers, High Street, Buckden, St. Neots towards Stirtloe, field walking to the Ouse Valley Way and then back through fields and woodsSome tarmac paths and one bridge, some areas can be slippery in wet weather. Monday 7th June – Meet at 10am at the recreation ground Olney. Approximately 4 miles crossing meadows and on towards Clifton Reynes, through the village returning along the river to the recreation ground. Postcode: MK46 4DW LEADER: Pat. Mob: 07894 724856

Sunday 13th June – Meet at 10am – A 5.5 mile walk from Rowney Warren car park, through Chicksands wood and past the MOD. This is an undulating walk with a couple of larger hills, one right at the end. Possible coffee at the end if the mobile unit is still around. The car park is on the left hand side after you have turned into the entrance for Chicksands from the A600. The 9A bus is available from Bedford Bus station. Monday 14th June – Meet at 10am at The Crown Pub, Station Road, Flitwick where we will be able to park and they will serve us drinks on our return.The just under 5 mile walk is an easy one called The Two Moors through woodland and across moorland. Sunday 27th June  – Meet at 10am An easy 5.5 mile walk around Blunham and surrounding countryside. Monday 28th June  – Meet at 10am.  Starting from Deepdale (what3words: //batches.pile.publisher) which is on the left hand side of the B1042 between the RSPB and Potton (Turn left at the railway signal!) Park safely on the left hand side of Deepdale immediately after turning off the B1042. The 4.5 mile walk will take us up Deepdale before turning left down the Long Riding towards the RSPB. We will then follow the RSPB Skylark trail across Sandy Heath following a permissive path around the disused sand pit before completing a circuit around Sandy Heath Transmitter. No stiles, one set of steps and several short rolling up and down sections. Some road walking but should be quiet on weekdays. Nearest coffee shop is at the RSPB but may not be open for takeaway. Sunday 4th July – Meet at 10am Meet at Hail Weston ford, Ford End. for a 6.5 mile walk across fields to Plummer car park, Grafham Water for tea break and great views. Return by a slightly different route. Postcode: PE19 5JR.  If approaching from the B645 the road to the ford may be gated as you approach. This is ok as you can park on roadside and walk the short distance to the ford. If you come off the A1 at Paxton and drive up the small road to the ford you can park on the roadside there. Monday 5th July – Meet at 10am along the High street near the church in Stagsden. Parking where able around the area.  The Royal George is now shut so I’m afraid there are no refreshments available after this walk.  The walk is 4.5 miles across pretty rolling meadows and along a ridge with fine views.  Some lanes and one stile with a very short ascent at the end. Sunday 11th July – Meet at 10am at Central Bedfordshire Council Car Park, Monks Way, Chicksands.  A 5.5 mile walk through Campton woods where the foxgloves may still be in flower, past the MOD, through the firing range and some more woods and back to the car park. There are some overgrown sections but they are passable and a couple of hills. There is a lay by on the right hand side we can park in rather than going into the main car park. There isn’t a cafe so you will need to bring your own refreshments for the break. Monday 12th July  Meet at 10am outside The Anchor, High Street, Great Barford. Parking roadside outside the church. Walking up to Blunham and back. A few gates and one stile. Sunday 18th July Meet at 10am – Starting from Cranfield this 6 mile walk is through Marston Thrift and down to Holcot Wood and returning via The Bunyan Trail. Lovely views of rolling countryside. Monday 19th July  Meet at 10am  A 4-4.5 mile circular walk from Ampthill Park to Millbrook church and back plus optional extra round Cooper’s Hill. Sunday 25th July   Meet at 10am – Woburn village hall Crawley Rd, Woburn, MK17 9QD. Walk is approx 5.5 miles there are some steps at the beginning and the end of walk. The walk is lovely through the Woburn Sands woods on good ground throughout. Towards the end of the walk there is a lovely view of the abbey with a short walk through the village back to the car park. Monday 26th July  Meet at 10am  A 4 mile walk from Folly Wood Field, Boughton End Lane, Lidlington. This is a new walk as we have just been given permission to use a field as a private car park at Folly Field, this will have its own challenges. Please arrive a little bit early as we have to lock the gate behind us as we begin our walk. I can’t guarantee we’ll finish exactly at 12pm and because of the locked gate walkers won’t be able to hurry ahead of the group to leave the field early. By beginning the walk from Folly field we avoid a challenging steep climb and can enjoy an easy walk along woodland tracks and meadows with good views over the surrounding countryside. Jackdoor Hill, Blackfield Plantation, Moneypot Hill and more. there are 2 roads to cross during the walk, one which can be busy, also a short ascent at the end of the walksDIRECTIONS: On reaching Lidlington village, drive past The Green Man pub on the right, on up the hill and take the first right turn onto Boughton End Lane. August 2021

Sunday 1st August – Meet at 10am at the Mill Theatre car park, Mill Road, Sharnbrook. This 5.5 mile circular walk passes through part of this pretty village before walking by the old windmill and heading for the lovely Felmersham nature reserve with its tranquil lakes and wildlife. On to Felmersham river bridge then along the banks of the River Great Ouse. A trip through the Pinchmill Islands before heading back to the start across open countryside and meadows. Monday 2nd August – Meet at 10am  A 4.32 mile walk from Woburn Village Hall, Woburn. We start the walk across meadows leading to a gradual ascent turning into a moderate climb at the top. Sunday 8th August – Meet at 10am at Mowsbury Park car park on Kimbolton Road off the B660 for a 5-6 mile ramble round Ravensden. Monday 9th August Meet at 10am  A figure of 8 walk from Sandy taking in part of the Sandy Green Wheel and the Greensand Ridge Walk. Meet at the free car park at Belfry Court, Sandy. (off the High Street almost opposite the church) There is one short steep climb, possible field with cows and some tarmac paths in the town. There are views across Sandy and beyond from the Pinnacle. Spot the peacocks at Lowfield farm and Rivel Ivel views. There are a couple of coffee shops in Sandy town centre for refreshments. Postcode: SG19 1JR What3words ///neatly.abundance.mallets. Sunday 15th August – Meet at 10am at St Mary’s The Virgin Church, Church End, Everton. This is a six mile walk on mainly flat, firm ground. It goes along part of an old Roman road, which went from Sandy to Godmanchester. It has panoramic views of the countryside and a secret bit of Second World War history. The return is via Tetworth and Woodbury Park with its broadleaved trees and occasional clumps of Scots pine. Postcode: SG19 2JZ LEADER: Michael. Mob: 07505 731114

Monday 16th August Meet at 10am  A 4 mile walk starting from the lay by at Deadman’s Hill on the A6 near the village of Clophill. The lay by is on the right if travelling from Bedford. The walk is through undulating woods and along a sandy ridge towards Maulden church. We return across some sheep grazing meadows back into the woods to the car park. Sunday 22nd August – Meet at 10am at Clapham High Street parade of shops. This a shortish walk exploring the high ground behind Clapham. We start with a bit of a climb then it’s pretty much downhill all the way, with some excellent views if the weather is fine. The proposed East/West rail link is due to cross this land so may be our last chance to enjoy walking in this area. Possibility of blackberries if we have had enough sun. Monday 23rd August Meet at 10am This will be a shorter walk (5.6km) but can be extended (by another 1.5km) for those who so wish. Meet at Priory Country Park off Barkers Lane, Bedford. We will head off along Riverfield Drive Meadow and go down onto ‘One Hundred Acre’ field. Returning to the beginning of this loop we will head into the Park and go through the Finger Lakes and return to the Cafe. Those who would like to walk further can take a loop around the lake and then back to the Cafe. There are some steps, some friendly cows and we go along a short but very overgrown, though passable path, so shorts are ill advised. Postcode: MK41 9DJ LEADER: Jim. Mob: 07961 862355

Sunday 29th August – Meet at 10am at Go Outdoors car park on Norse Road. This walk will take us across Castle Mill lock where we will turn right and follow the Great Ouse to near Priory Marina. We will then turn left and follow the old railway track through the woods to the Danish Camp . We can stop for coffee at the Danish Camp before returning to the car park following the Great Ouse and back past Castle Mill lock. Mostly paths but some field walking. Woods can be a bit muddy. Monday 30th August – Meet at 10am  Parking in Aspley Guise car park, The Common, West Hill, this is a 4.3 mile walk. One of our newer Monday walks beginning around the golf course perimeter, continuing along country lanes and tracks and finally through some lovely woodland. No stiles. Postcode: MK17 8DX. Sunday 5th September – Meet at 10am in the car park on the right near the end of Park Avenue just past the entrance to Wrest Park, Silsoe. This 6 mile walk goes past the back of Wrest park to Shillington. There are lovely views of the countryside, especially from the church at Shillington. Monday 6th September – Meet at 10am at The Cock, 23 High Street, Broom, Biggleswade. Please park at the back of the overflow car park on the grass. This is a 4 mile wile walk starting from a small village 8.5 miles from Bedford, walking around 4 lakes. It has 6 acres of gravel pits made into a wildlife sanctuary. Sunday 12th September – Meet at 10am This 6 mile walk is around Little Staughton. Starting from Little Staughton church we walk on high ground around the 13th Century motte and bailey castle once owned by one Sir Adam de Creting in 1275 and where the moat still remains. Good views and field walking towards Staughton Moor, then across fields through a wood circling back again on high ground with good views to an ancient green lane then back across fields to the village. Little Staughton church is in sight for most of the walk. A small bridge to cross and can be muddy and uneven through the woods and down the green lane. Postcode MK44 2BL LEADER: Linda. Monday 13th September – Meet at 10am. Starting from Sharnbrook Mill Theatre car park Mill Rd Sharnbrook MK44 1NP. (OS GR TL 010 591.)This 5.5 mile circular walk goes through part of this pretty village before passing the old windmill and heading for the lovely Felmersham nature reserve with its tranquil lakes and wildlife. On to Felmersham river bridge then along the banks of the River Great Ouse. A trip through the PinchMill Islands before heading back to the start across open countryside and meadows. Easy walking with some uneven surfaces and parts can be muddy when wet. Free parking with kind permission of the Mill Theatre. Sorry no toilets or refreshments available. Sunday 19th September – Meet at 10am at Bedford Park, West Park Lodge, Park Avenue (at the top of De Pary’s Avenue) This 5 mile walk takes us through Bedford’s Victorian Park to Mallard Hill (quite steep), pass the allotments to open fields into Clapham Woods, doubling back to Mallard Hill (down this time) into the park. Parking is free on Sunday in De Pary’s Avenue and Park Avenue. Bedford Park is a 20 minute walk from the town’s bus station and 25 minutes from the train station. Monday 20th September – Meet at 10am outside The Star & Garter pub, High Street, Silsoe. (Parking on the roadside) Walking up from SIlsoe towards Thrift Wood then to Pulloxhill. This walk is approximately 4 miles with a few gates and possibly some long grasses. Sunday 26th September – Meet at 10am at Waresley Garden Centre, Sandy. This is a 6 mile circular walk from Waresley, walking on easy paths to the Gransdens and Gransden woods. Monday 27th September – Meet at 10am at The Royal George, Stevington.  May be able to park in the car park but this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Joyce will let everyone know by WhatsApp once she has confirmation. This is a 5 mile walk which starts by walking down tracks and across a field which has just been ploughed, so no path flattened or visible last week so a little challenging. Once across we walk through lovely park land through the Picts Hill estate which has a variety of deer, highland cattle and water buffalo. (No dogs welcome on this walk). We arrive on the outskirts of Turvey then return along what was once a small railway line up some steps. Further along the one-time railway track there’s another set of steps (similar to a staircase at home), then through some woods and fields with fine views of the windmill in the distance back to the cars. Sunday 3rd October – Meet at 10am at Grafham Village Shop, Brampton Road, Grafham. This is a 6 mile walk to Grafham Water via the woods and back round the lake. Postcode: PE28 0UR. LEADER: Linda Mob: 07733 343702

Monday 4th October Meet at 10am at The Swan Pub, 2, Wavendon Road, Salford. Please park in the far grass overflow car park. Refreshments will be available after the walk. The walk is 5 miles along good tracks and some country roads, beginning at the 12th century church of ‘Saint Mary the Virgin.’ Making our way across meadows towards the picturesque hamlet of Aspley Hall, lots of horses and fine properties here. On towards ‘Saint Nicholas’ Hulcote church also centuries old, eventually into the lower part of Hulcote woods. We turn here continuing down an attractive track then country road (more horses) returning to Aspley Hall, then Waterhall and back into Salford. There are 3 stiles (in good condition) and one slight incline, plenty of easy, firm surface walking. Postcode: MK17 8BD LEADER: Joyce. Mob: 07929 246301

Sunday 10th October – Meet at 10am next to St James Church on the corner of Silsoe High Street and Park Avenue. This 5 mile walk is from Silsoe village to Higham Gobian and returns via The Camp and Wrest Park. Postcode: MK45 4DR LEADER: Micheal. Mob: 07505 731114

Monday 11th October – Meet at 10am at the Village Hall car park, Gold Street (opposite the Fox and Hounds) Riseley. The Village Hall are happy for us to park in their car park but can you please park away from the recycling bin as it is emptied on a Monday and they need space for the lorry to get in. A walk of approximately 4 miles over farmland, woodland and views of Melchbourne House, there may be some mud due to the amount of rain we have had. Some WWII facts to add to the mix. The walk embraces both woods and grass verges and offers wonderful views across the countryside. There are no stiles but several kissing gates. Monday 18th October – Meet at 10am Starting from Mowsbury Park car park off Wentworth Drive this will be a 4-5 mile walk through Putnoe Woods and up towards Ravensden before circling back via Salph End. Much of the walk will be on farmland so any dogs will need to be kept on a lead due to the proximity of grazing sheep. There is one, quite lengthy moderate hill and the potential for a few of the paths to get a bit muddy in places.
